CHESTERTOWN Every time Carlos Santana plays, it seems, there’s a little Chestertown in his sound.

PRS Guitars are prized by guitarists around the world. Santana may simply be the best-known endorser.

Chesapeake CNC on Dixon Drive takes up contracts in any industry where finished assemblies require precision parts. For the PRS factory in nearby Stevensville, that includes strap buttons, pickup polepieces, and inserts for aligning guitar bodies and necks.

Owner Bob Jacob was in to talk to the county commissioners about his company, which uses computer-controlled machines, Nov. 15.

He told them he’s expanded from one employee — himself — to eight, including his wife Lisa, since 2003. Jacob started with one lathe in a garage in Gregg Neck and moved to Chestertown three years ago.

In the past Chesapeake CNC has made bone screws and related hardware for orthopedic surgery, and fills a lot of orders for airflow parts, for example, airbrush tips.

Most recently, Jacob told the commissioners, he shut his machines down for a week for training. Despite the lost business, he says it has already paid for itself “in a matter of months,” simply by increasing machine utilization from 300 hours to 340 hours, more than 10 percent…
